Root Canals.
Root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, saves an infected or damaged tooth and helps you avoid having it removed. A root canal becomes necessary when a neglected cavity reaches all the way to the pulp at the center of the tooth, causing the pulp to become infected. Regular cleanings and checkups help catch problems like this early.
Trauma can also cause deep damage to a tooth's nerve. Once the pulp becomes infected, it can begin to affect the surrounding bone — an abscess. Infected pulp doesn't heal on its own and needs treatment.
Symptoms of infected pulp can include sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets, pain, swelling, discomfort when biting, or a bad taste in the mouth. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the issue is only found during a checkup.
What to expect
A root canal cleans out the infected pulp and disinfects the canals inside the tooth. Once the infection is resolved, the canal is filled to prevent it from returning.
A dental crown is usually recommended afterward to cover and restore the tooth — ours are designed digitally and milled in our in-house lab by a board-certified prosthodontist.
