Inlays and Onlays.
Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair a tooth when the damage is too extensive for a filling but doesn't require a full crown. Both are crafted to fit the exact shape of the affected area and are bonded into place, restoring the tooth's strength and function while preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.
The difference between the two comes down to where the restoration sits. An inlay fits within the grooves on the biting surface of the tooth, between the cusps. An onlay covers a larger area, extending over one or more of the cusps to protect a portion of the tooth that would otherwise be left vulnerable.
When each is recommended
These restorations are typically considered when a cavity or old filling has left a tooth with more damage than a standard filling can address, but the remaining tooth structure is still healthy enough that a crown isn't necessary. An inlay may be recommended when the damage is contained between the cusps, while an onlay is better suited to a tooth with a compromised cusp or a larger area to cover.
How they restore the tooth
Inlays and onlays can be made from materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or gold, chosen to match the strength and appearance needs of the tooth being treated. Because they're fabricated to fit precisely and bonded rather than cemented loosely in place, they help the tooth distribute biting forces naturally, reducing the risk of further cracking or breakdown over time.
What to expect
Treatment begins with removing the damaged portion of the tooth and taking an impression or digital scan so the restoration can be fabricated to fit precisely. Once ready, the inlay or onlay is checked for fit and bite, then bonded permanently into place. A comprehensive exam is where we determine whether an inlay, an onlay, or another restoration is the right fit for your tooth.
